Hi, I'm Quinn, a 12-year old pit bull lover.
I have two pit bulls and two cats. They are all rescues. Our newest rescue is Tank, adopted by earthangels-rescue.org and I’ve been training him a lot. He has an incredible personality which makes training him so much fun. I train him everyday on walks and at home. He is the love of my life. Tank is 8 months old and he knows how to sit, stay, shake, lay down, up, down, jump, balance a treat on his nose, and his newest trick is “bunny” which is him sitting with his front paws up. We are still working on it, this one is pretty tough for him. I love these guys and couldn’t imagine my life without them. |
Pit Bulls Shouldn’t Be Banned – written by Quinn
Pit bulls are getting banned all over the world because they are considered a dangerous breed of dog. But are pit bulls naturally aggressive, or did they learn it from humans? Pit bulls are large dogs that have short hair and usually a big head, they are very strong and muscular and they usually weigh about 60 pounds. Some breeds that are considered pit bulls or a pit bull mix are: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and American Bully. BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) doesn’t allow pit bulls to live
in certain areas. BSL started because people thought these dogs were aggressive and were unsafe to have
in communities. There is no evidence that this is true. Therefore, pit bulls should not be banned.
One reason pit bulls shouldn’t be banned is because they are not naturally aggressive. For example,
“The resurgence of dogfighting which is illegal in the United States, Great Britain and many other countries, has led to irresponsible breeders encouraging such traits in their animals.” (Pit Bull Terrier) This shows pit bulls aren’t naturally aggressive, it’s the owners that make them aggressive. In addition, “The American Pit Bull Terrier – a breed often portrayed as highly aggressive – is consistently ranked as one of the least aggressive dogs.” (Hare and Woods) If this doesn’t show you that pit bulls aren’t aggressive, I don’t know what will.
Another reason pit bulls should not be banned is because BSL is not effective for dog bite prevention. According to The Humane Society of the United States, “experts agree that breed-specific legislation
and similar policies that restrict dogs based on appearance do not reduce dog bites in communities or enhance public safety.” (All Dogs Are Equal”) This shows BSL does not work to prevent dog bites. Also, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says, “... while BSL may look good on the surface, it is not a reliable or effective solution for dog bite prevention.” (Why Breed Specific Legislation Is Not The Answer”) This clearly states that BSL does not work for preventing dog bites.
Some people think BSL is a nice way to stop people from breeding pit bulls and training them to fight (“Should Pit Bulls Be Banned?”). However this is not true because when pit bulls are banned, people start training other dogs to fight. For example, “following a 2005 pit bull ban in Council Bluff, Iowa, Boxer and Labrador Retriever bites increased, as did overall dog bites.” This shows people will just start breeding and training other dogs to be aggressive and fight.
Dogs should never be banned, especially when there is no evidence that BSL makes our communities safer. Pit bulls are being trained to fight, but they are one of the least aggressive dogs. All dogs can bite if you train them to, but not every dog is getting banned. We need to stop BSL; its unfair.
